On Friday, March 22, 2013, Mayor Gerald J. Tarantolo hosted an event at the Eatontown Borough Hall as part of the Mayors’ Book Club initiative with the New Jersey State League of Municipalities Education Foundation and Monmouth University’s Department of Education. Participating schools, where children read a thousand books by the end of the year, will receive a monetary donation to their school's library program. The program is co-sponsored by: United Water, Jersey Central Power and Light, New Jersey Natural Gas, New Jersey American Water and Barnes and Noble Bookstores.
Mayor Tarantolo read to first graders from the Margaret L. Vetter Elementary School located in Eatontown. Students from Jamie Johnson’s and Lara Neary’s classes were in attendance. The Mayor’s reading increased the students total book count read to 875. The students were so excited about their progress and were confident that they would reach 1,000 books by the end of the year.Following the reading, Mayor Tarantolo hosted an impromptu “Council meeting” where different students from the audience acted out the roles of elected officials, municipal employees and appointed professionals. Other students asked questions from the audience as taxpayers and learned how everyone has a part to play in responsible municipal management.
